Community Land Technician

Reporting to: YNLR Manager of Environment

Position:

Under the supervision of the Ya’thi Néné Land and Resource Office’s (YNLR) Manager of Environment, the Community Land Technician (CLT) will contribute to YNLR’s goal of a healthy, prosperous, sustainable future for the region. The applicant must reside in Fond du Lac. Key responsibility includes the communication of the Etthén Néné Stewardship Area (Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas - IPCA) project to community members, conducting interviews with community members on the Duty to Consult process and other initiatives, working with Exploration companies including site inspections, coordination of community meetings, and travel on the land in all seasons (occasionally utilizing own means of transportation) to document and report observations and to conduct environmental monitoring.

Responsibilities:

• Communicate and engage community members (Elders, Leadership, Land Users, and Youth) to support the development and a full understanding of projects occurring in Nuhenéné.

• Coordinate engagement sessions in the community, by organizing meetings, advertising, and communicating to ensure community members are aware of ongoing work, including that of Ya’thi Néné.

• Work with Exploration companies to ensure consistent and effective management of Nuhenéné, including conducting of site inspections and reporting of corrective actions.

• Conduct environmental monitoring activities and participation in research initiatives in Nuhenéné as directed.

• Support the Project Manager to promote and communicate the Etthén Néné Stewardship Areas (IPCA) project with all community members including Elders, Leadership, Land Users, and Youth.

• Investigate, document, and report observations on the land.

• Supervision of work crews/contractors and coordination of projects.

• Ability to travel for meetings, training, field work, and workshops/conferences.

• Ability to work effectively independently (without supervision) and as part of a team.

• Gather and share information with various agencies to promote a positive working relationship between stakeholders.

• Prepare reports and presentation materials for meetings as required.

• Provide support to the community as directed: this may include community events, Youth and Elder activities, and cultural events.

• Travel on the land in all seasons, often in isolated, remote locations in harsh weather to conduct fieldwork and environmental monitoring.

Qualifications and Experience:

• High school diploma or relevant work experience.

• Experience working with Youth and/or Elders is an asset.

• Minimum 5 years of experience travelling on the land, by snowmobile, boat, or other methods.

• Ability to read maps, use GPS and modern communication technology and familiarity with traditional territory.

• General knowledge of wildlife, bird, and fish species in the Athabasca Region.

• Valid driver’s license.

• Vulnerable Sector Security Clearance (CPIC).

Other:

• Regular travel south and to remote areas required.

• Regular attendance at meetings.

• Flexibility.

• Familiar with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Outlook, and Teams

• Ability to speak Dene considered an asset but not required.

• Salary will be commensurate with experience.
